Cook Off-Road Racing Press Release:

Parker AZ.
January 7, 2012
Best in the Desert Parker 250

“This past weekend saw Cook Off-Road Racing taking on the Best in the Desert at Parker Az. The weekend began with tech and registration at the Blue Water Resort on Friday, UTV’s were rolling in right until the close of tech. At final count we had 24 vehicles signed in, a new record for Best in the Desert. The Rigid Industires / Fabtech / Torco Motor Oils / Griffin Radiators sponsored UTV was through tech with flying colors. We headed out to the main pits for final prep and to put our race plan into action. This race we teamed up with our racing partner Dennis Jean in the #1949 XMF sponsored UTV. Since the vehicle was so well prepped by our crew chief Jeff Correia there was very little to do, checked all the nuts and bolts and put the car cover on for the night”

“5:30 AM rolled around pretty quick on race morning, but the team was up and getting ready before the sunrise, and by 6:45 we were staged and poised to run. At about 7:30 our race began, and the mighty RZR left the line in a blaze of glory. The ride was pretty uneventful for about the first 15 miles, but after that the RZR began to sputter on the low end, our new throttle body was not performing as it should, as we continued on. We found the RZR ran fine at the top end wide open, but when we slowed into the turns it was evident we had an issue. Our team worked very hard trying to overcome the issues at hand and it seemed we had. At the mid way pits we had moved into second place behind Matt Parks in the Jagged sponsored Polaris, but as we entered the mid way pits I noticed our team mate Dennis Jean hard on our tail as we exited the pits Dennis took us on the inside line and never looked back. As we continued on Dennis had stretched out and we kept a 2 mile buffer between us.”

“We finally found our rythm in the dirt and things seemed to be on pace, we had settled into 3rd place with about 15 minutes over 4th place. Then it happened, the dreaded flat tire… I can’t really say I was to surprised after the rock garden we had just gone through. Since my co-rider (Brendan Cook) and I have had so few flats on our Maxxis Tires, we were a little rusty on the procedure, took a little longer but we got the job done. By the time we were back under way, the train of vehicles chasing us had not only caught us, but passed us. From this point on I put it all out to try and catch up. At the end of lap one, we rolled into the pits, took on fuel, did a once over on the car, and then it was back to work hunting down the pack.  We only had one lap to get back into the hunt and try as we did the mighty RZR was able to finish in 8th place. Our partner Dennis Jean came from way back in the pack to pull off a truly David v. Goliath finish by placing 2nd against the Polaris factory backed team of Matt Parks and Team Jagged-X.”

“Just finishing this race was a big accomplishment after our dissapointing 2011 season. The RZR S motor supplied by Cal Custom Polaris never missed a beat, the motor stayed well lubricated by the fine products supplied by Torco Motor Oils, the motor was exhaling with ease
due in part to our Muzzy Performance exhaust, and of course you could see the car even through the thickest silt with our Rigid Industries lights. All of our sponsors had a pivotal role in our finish and all of us at Cook Off-Road Racing would like to thank, Fabtech Motor Sports, NOS Energy Drinks, Grant Steering Wheels, OMF Wheels, Zamped Helmets, Pink Divas, 4130 Clothing, Cal Hot Coatings, Optima Batteries, Cargo Buckles.”

“Stay tuned for more exciting off-road racing action, you can find us next weekend at the Sobobba Grand Prix co-piloting with Team Jean. In February I will again be on board with Team Jean at King of the Hammers. In March you will find the mighty Cook Off-Road Racing RZR on Fremont St in downtown Las Vegas preparing for the Mint 400, see everyone soon….”

Cook Off-Road Racing’s 2011 Season Recap

January 4th, 2012

Well the dust has finally settled on the 2011 BITD season and for some race teams, it wasn’t pretty. The Fabtech UTV team (aka Cook Off-Road Racing) placed 6th overall in the series, having had five engine failures at five races which made winning the championship a bit difficult. But nevertheless the team worked through their issues and with the help of Trevor at Cal Custom Polaris, the team pulled a rabbit out of the hat for Henderson. The Fabtech team purchased a crate RZR S motor, and were off to the races! The Fabtech RZR never missed a beat at Henderson, a true testament to “Keep it Simple”.

The Fabtech team came together early in 2011 when they added one of their newest sponsors and co-driver, Tammy Faulkner of Pink Divas apparel. Also joining with Tammy was her husband Dan, Tammy’s father, as well as Deanne and Velvet… all who became the instant pit crew. Jeff Correia, The Fabtech Crew Chief, was simply amazing and was always working late-nights at Sean’s house, pulling the motor countless times. Sean describes Jeff as the “cornerstone of the program”.

Sean thanks the team’s Pit Queen and his wife Gina, saying “she was the voice in my radio that kept me calm during the many disasters. She stepped up and took care of all our pit needs including running the chase vehicles across the desert”. He also thanks the rest of the team, Ricky Leard of TRM, his sons Colton and Brendan for filling in behind the wheel and for their never ending support for him and the sport. One last huge thanks goes out to Seans other co-driver, who he has co-driven with in the VORRA series, Dennis Jean #1959. Dennis has been one of Sean’s best friends and closest allies this season.

And of course the sponsors! For without them, the team could not do what they do:
Fabtech Motorsports, Rigid Industries, NOS Energy Drinks, Maxxis Tires, Red House BBQ, Optima Batteries, Muzzy Performance, Holz Performance, OMF Wheels, Torco Motor Oils, Rugged Race Products, Cal Hot Coatings, and 4130 Clothing.

Sean would like to add, “We here at Cook Off-Road Racing have learned so much this past season that we can’t wait to attack the 2012 season. You can look for us to be at all the Best in the Desert races, VORRA races, and some HDRA races the season finale will see us at the starting line for the Baja 1000, yes you heard it the BAJA 1000 this will be our year! Look forward to seeing some of you next year, and thanks for all the support this past year”.

Flow Team member Ty Wolfskill wins the final round of the ASCC Lucas Oil Regional Series!

December 5th, 2011

Ty Wolfskill, a newly added member to the 4130 Flow Team, arrived with his team at Firebird International Raceway at 5:30 am on November 12th, ready to take on and win the Arizona Short Course Championship. The crew prepared the #16 Honda Pilot FL400R for the first practice, then Ty suited up and headed to the line. With having his last car blow up during the last round, he had to drive a completely different car, and this practice was much needed to get used to the feel for things. Ty used the practice round to find which lines would be best to use during the race, and when he came back into pit, the team made all the necessary adjustments for the next heat.

Ty began the heat race in the last row. Though this race was only six laps, he knew he would have to work hard to get up front. He was struggling to perfect turn three and had lost a lot of time in this corner, but he managed to pass five other cars, which got him a 3rd place finish. The points leader had won the heat race, which allowed him to gain an extra two points over Ty. The team had some down time between the heat and main race, so Ty talked over with his crew chief and spotter about the best possible way to get through the third corner. By the time the main race was to begin, Ty was confident that he would know the best way to handle the turn, and headed towards staging where he would start in the 3rd place position.

The green flag dropped, and Ty was able to get the holeshot into turn one. He could not hold that lead for long as the current points leader, Adam Gruender, would pass him in turn two. Ty stayed close with Adam, and on the second lap, Adam passed one of the SR1s’. Ty needed to get by him too to stay with Adam, and he passed the SR1 in the final corner.  It was a tight squeeze, as that section of the track was meant for single file racing. The benefit of driving the smallest car on the track, is that it is able to fit into tight spots.

Ty chased Adam Gruender for the next couple of laps. When the mandatory caution came out, the field was stacked up to restart. Ty remembers the announcer over the loud speaker saying, “This is where some fun stuff usually happens under the yellow, where one driver likes to play a mind game with another driver, but I don’t quite see that happening between Wolfskill and Gruender.” At that time, Ty’s spotter got on the radio and told him to give Adam a small push. Ty did as he was told and tapped the Polaris, and Adam waved to Ty in his Honda. The crowd began to cheer and laugh.

As the field approached the green flag, Ty made a big mistake and got a horrible start. Adam started to pull away, and the SR1 got by Ty. The third turn was coming up, and Ty managed to pass the SR1 on the inside. His plan for handling the third turn had worked, and Ty had caught back up to Adam. The Polaris hit a pothole in the last corner, which caused the shock to break. With Gruender down, Ty was able to get by him in turn one and he began to pull away from the pack. Ty saw the white flag ahead of him and he knew the win was his!

Ty pulled up to the podium where he received his trophy and hat. He dedicated this race to his grandfather who passed away a month before. He also thanked his uncle’s, along with the rest of his family, and 4130 Clothing, for their continued support!

Congratulations Ty! We look forward to supporting you throughout the 2012 season!

Kim Wertens and team give it their best at the 2011 M.O.R.E. Powder Puff Race!

October 12th, 2011

The defending 2nd place finisher of the 2010 M.O.R.E. Powder Puff Race, Kimberlee Wertens and her co-driver, also her niece, Bree LaMee, came into this years 2011 Power Puff Race with hopes to finish at the top of the podium in the UTV Class. However, a brutal course with many jagged rocks, also known as “tire killers”, would make this very difficult for them.

Kim and Bree lined up bright and early on Saturday morning, and headed out for their first lap. They were having a good run so far, and getting used to the car out on the track again. Kim pulled up to the start/finish line to get their number, when the car died right on the line. The timing official also noticed a flat tire on the front drivers side, so the car was pushed off of the course, and the girls were towed back to their pit. While changing the tire, Kim noticed that she had managed to bend the inside of the rim as well. The team also determined that the car had an overloaded electrical system, so they got the car jump-started, and Kim and Bree headed back out on the course.

Their 2nd lap was the fastest yet, less than 50 minutes! On the 3rd lap, they had passed by their pit about a mile and a half, only to nearly roll it in a HUGE whoops section nearby. Kim hopped to the right at about a 30-45 degree angle, and then the car landed hard on the drivers side tires. She gunned it, and they made it through. It was only about 2 miles after the near-rollover, that they hit the worst of the tire killers. Kim was able to avoid most of them, but one jumped out of nowhere right in the middle of the track. Kim says “I was able to drive for a bit so I thought it was OK. But then we pulled hard left and I couldn’t keep it straight”.

She motored off the track, where they realized that both the front & back tires on the drivers side were flat. They limped it up to the next area to get help, but the damage was done. Both of the rims were crushed on the inside as well. At that time, they knew that the race was over for them.

The engine was still in great shape, so Kim and Bree were able to drive the car back to their pit very slowly. A full walk-around on the car was done, where they noticed that the pro-armor from the front bumper to about mid-car had been taken out but the last rock they hit. Calls were already being made Monday morning to get the parts needed to fix the car.

Kim Wertens and her team want to thank everyone who came out and supported her and her niece this year. She also hopes to race again after the first of the year, so keep a look out for more racing action from Kim!

Team Driver Kimberlee Wertens to race in the 2011 M.O.R.E. Powder Puff Race for the Cure

September 26th, 2011

In only a couple short weeks, the 6th annual M.O.R.E Powder Puff Race for the Cure will be in full effect! For the second year in a row, 4130 Clothing will assist in sponsoring team driver Kimberlee Wertens, as she takes on other female racers in the UTV class. Below is the pre-race letter from Kimberlee herself. We wish Kim and her the team the best of luck this year!

“As many of you may know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. And this October 8th will mark the 4th year I will be racing in the M.O.R.E. (Mojave Off-road Enthusiast) Powder Puff Race for the Cure. It’s and off-roading race in Barstow, CA. The poceeds from this race benefit the Cedar Sinai Woman’s Breast Cancer Research Center.”

“This year should be very exciting. I’m looking to defend my 2nd place UTV spot from last year and will be on the hunt for First. M.O.R.E. changed up the track this year. The course is shorter by 8 miles. So it’s a 20 mile loop and they have reversed the direction from the past 3 races. It should make for an exciting twist this year.”

“I’m also super exited to have some really great sponsors this year:
First my lovely husband, Sean and his company DIL for getting my car all decked out in Purple powder coating this year and making sure I can keep my car in tip top condition for racing.
Custom Creations for keeping my car mechanically & technically set for the race.
4130 Clothing for a sponsoring a portion of my race fees
Sand Castle Industries for providing me a couple of awesome blinged out team shirts and taking care of my Cedar’s donation for the race.
Twisted Stitch for hooking me up on a great deal to get my seats re-worked to match my new color scheme.”

“I couldn’t do the race without the help of all my sponsors.”

“This year I’ll be having a new co-driver at my side, my neice, Bree LaMee. She’s stoked to have the chance to join me in the race this year. And, I’m looking forward to sharing the experience with her.”

“We’ll be pitting in the same area we’ve been in the past few years. But this year instead of it being at Mile 1-2 on the track, we’ll be at mile 18-19. We’ll be pitting at the end of the loop instead of the beginning.”

“We’d love to have as many people joining us for a cheering section as possible. If you can make it out to the race it starts at 8:30am on Saturday, October 8th. Friday night is also a fun evening because everyone pushes their cars through tech from 4-9pm over at the outlets.”

“If your interested in joining us, please let me know and I’ll send you more detailed information.”

“If you can’t make it to the race, but would still like to help out, donations to Cedar Sinai are ALWAYS welcome. Even the smallest donation can help to make a difference. Donations can be made online at:
https://www.discoveringforlife.org/powderpuff2011

Hope to see you at the races.
